Top 5 March Madness Sleepers

Every year in the big sports media outlets certain college basketball teams get hyped up and are put in the spotlight all the time with great performance after great performance (think this year's Arizona or Syracuse), but then there are the teams that fly under the radar while also putting up great performances themselves and then arrive in March as the teams that nobody wants to play. This post is for honoring those respective teams.

1. Virginia Cavaliers - 16-5 Overall ; 7-1 in ACC

Good Wins: @ Notre Dame 68-53. UNC 76-61

Bad Losses: @Tennessee 52-87

Important Notes: 3 of 5 losses came to ranked opponents, 1st in nation in points allowed (56.0)

The Cavaliers are a team that come March, nobody will want to play due to a nasty defense and a hardened squad due to a tough ACC schedule.

2. New Mexico Lobos - 16-4 Overall ; 7-1 in MWC

Good Wins: Cincinnati 63-54, Marquette 75-68, Boise St. 84-75

Bad Losses: New Mexico St. 61-67

Important Notes: 2 of 4 losses came to currently ranked teams

The Lobos are a team that moves the ball around well to get open shots and take advantage of them. Whichever defense is assigned to them in the tournament better have their head on a swivel.

3. Minnesota Golden Gophers -  15-6 Overall ; 4-4 in Big Ten

Good Wins: @Ohio St. 63-53, Wisconsin 81-68

Bad Losses: None

Important Notes: 27th in nation in steals per game (8.2), took #7 Michigan St. to overtime at East Lansing.

The Golden Gophers are a team that is opportunistic on defense that thrives off getting turnovers, their team also has four scorers in double digits instead of relying too much on one or two players.

4. Providence Friars - 15-6 Overall ; 5-3 in Big East

Good Wins: Creighton 81-68, Xavier 81-72

Bad Losses: None

Important Notes: Veteran laden team with 4 seniors and 3 juniors

Providence is another team that spreads the ball around well with 4 double digit scorers, main weakness is shooting (ranked 310 in the nation in FG%), but they're 78th in the nation in defense to help counter it. If they have a night where they get hot to pair with the defense the opposition will be in for a long night.

5. George Washington - 17-3 Overall ; 5-1 in Atlantic 10

Good Wins: Creighton 60-53, VCU 76-66

Bad Losses: None

Important Notes: Top 100 in PPG, ORPG, APG, FG%, points allowed per game, DRPG, BPG, and SPG

A very good all around team on offense and defense, hard to catch them on an off night, their offense can pick up their defense or visa-versa. Another team with four scorers in double digits. Not an easy matchup by any stretch of the imagination for an opposing team come March.
